GMT Gaming: Spring 2023 Convention Reports

Hi everyone! It’s always exciting for us to see our games played in so many different places, so for those interested we’d like to share some photos (and one video) from some of the conventions we’ve seen GMT titles played at recently. Enjoy!

Buckeye Game Fest, April 2023

(Convention Report by The Players’ Aid. If you’d like to read the full convention debrief, you can find that on their blog here.)

Just wanted to report back on our adventures at Buckeye Game Fest this past week. We displayed the advance copy of The British Way provided by GMT and ended up engaging with about 10 people about the game, how it compares to the rest of the COIN Series, and its accessibility.

We also ran 4 total COIN Series Teach & Play events, 2 on Friday and 2 on Saturday with a total of 14 players. Grant ran Cuba Libre, and Alexander ran Andean Abyss. Everyone had a great time, and we gave away the games you provided as prizes.

We also played lots of GMT Games including Unconditional Surrender! (2-player but we had some help with the Soviets and Italians at times), Time of Crisis (3-player), Fire in the Lake (4-player), and Sword of Rome (5-player).

All in all we had a very productive and fun 4 1/2 days at Buckeye Game Fest.

Campamento Barton, May 2023

(Convention Report by Plantagenet designer Francisco Gradaille)

Plantagenet multiplayer game at Campamento Barton Convention, Zaragoza (please note that this is using a playtest copy, not the final version of the game)

On the 13th of May there was a game of Plantagenet using the multiplayer game options included with the rules. The game has proved to be very fun when command is shared amongst a group of players or when each one is in charge of one of the Lord’s decisions.

GMT Weekend at the Warehouse, April 2023

(Convention Report by Gene Billingsley and Convention Photos graciously provided by Michael Arrighi, Tim Porter, and Patrick Mulvihill)

We had about 100 gamers in attendance, as well as about a dozen designers and developers. It was great to meet some of you for the first time and renew friendships and chat with many long-time team members and attendees. I know we come to this event to play games, but more and more as the years pass, I enjoy the “hanging out with old and new friends” part best, regardless of whether it’s around a game board.

I definitely saw several games this time that will be on our P500 list over the coming year. One is from one of our long-time designers, but a couple were from designers new to GMT (and one from a first-time designer). One of the aspects of the Weekend that I love is that it’s an easy venue for new designers to come and show us their game face-to-face. So, Kai Jensen, Mark Simonitch, Rachel, and I got to see and play a few cool new games and enjoyed meeting and getting to know the designers.

Speaking of Rachel, she and I managed to squeeze out enough time to run come-and-go demos of the advance copy of Mr. President on three afternoons during the event. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and said things like “it feels like the decisions the President would have to make,” which made me feel like maybe I got it right, design-wise.

Running a demo using Gene’s designer advance copy of Mr. President!

Overall, as usual, this weekend was a tremendous time for enjoying our hobby together with our customers, looking at new games, and getting to do some team-building and strategic planning with our team members. If you joined us this time, thanks again for attending! You definitely made it a better event because you were there. And I hope many of you will join us October 12-15 for our next Weekend at the Warehouse.

We’d like to do one of these articles every couple of months. If you have a convention report or photos you’d like featured from a convention you attended where GMT games were played, please contact me (Rachel) at rachel@gmtgames.com. I will make sure to include it in the next article!
