Congress of Vienna at Nov. 2024’s SDHistCon Gaming Convention

As mentioned in a prior InsideGMT post, Jon Carter, of CoV Transatlantic Team Playtest Team fame*, created a version of the game, from Terry Leeds’ graphic files, for bringing Congress of Vienna to SDHistCon in San Diego.  In recognition of a four-hour time limit per play session, Jon chose to present the three turn Desperate Times: The Campaign of France 1814 scenario.  For more regarding this scenario, with links to additional Congress of Vienna material, see: Congress of Vienna Scenario Set-Up Maps with Associated Historical Backgrounds | Inside GMT blog

Below is a copy of the email Jon provided Game Designer Frank Esparrago and Assistant Designer/Editor Fred Schachter, with some excellent photographs, of Congress of Vienna at SDHisCon.

RevCon 2024 After Action Report

RevCon 2024 Command Central

It was a good year! Thirty-six individuals competed across a spectrum of five Revolutionary War games at RevCon during Prezcon in Charlottesville, Virginia last week.

As always, players either played in only a single favorite game, in multiple games, or they competed in all five games in pursuit of the coveted “George Washington Award” for excellence in American Revolutionary War gaming. This year’s “George,” as we affectionately call the plaque, was once again provided by friend of the series Tim Miller with Miller EG Designs. We are grateful to Tim for his generosity.

GMT Gaming: Spring 2023 Convention Reports

Hi everyone! It’s always exciting for us to see our games played in so many different places, so for those interested we’d like to share some photos (and one video) from some of the conventions we’ve seen GMT titles played at recently. Enjoy!

Buckeye Game Fest, April 2023

(Convention Report by The Players’ Aid. If you’d like to read the full convention debrief, you can find that on their blog here.)

Just wanted to report back on our adventures at Buckeye Game Fest this past week. We displayed the advance copy of The British Way provided by GMT and ended up engaging with about 10 people about the game, how it compares to the rest of the COIN Series, and its accessibility.

We also ran 4 total COIN Series Teach & Play events, 2 on Friday and 2 on Saturday with a total of 14 players. Grant ran Cuba Libre, and Alexander ran Andean Abyss. Everyone had a great time, and we gave away the games you provided as prizes.

SDHistCon 2020: The Great Online Experiment

In a year when boardgaming conventions have – by necessity – had to cancel all events, many organizers are seeking to rebuild their convention communities by taking them online. The popular San Diego Historical Games Convention (SDHistCon) wants to do just that and keep its wargaming community alive and thriving.

Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea (& Mark McLaughlin) at TotalCon

For the first time in my 40+ years of game design I was invited to a convention as an Industry Guest – all expenses paid (they even gave me food and beer). I had never been to TotalCon, even though I live in New England and it is 90 minutes from home. Thanks to podcaster Jonathan Reinhart, who interviewed me last year, however, the invite came and I accepted – and I am so glad I did!

Convention Report: The GMT Delegation’s January 2020 Visit to Bellota Con III in Badajoz, Spain & Congress of Vienna (CoV)

The Locale: Landscape picture taken from the Bellota Con convention site. Dominating the scene is the Guadiana River and the ancient bridge with Roman ashlars on the horizon as well as the old fortress of Elvas on the Portuguese side of the Spanish-Portuguese border.

Badajoz is a small and quiet city in the southwest of Spain with 150,000 inhabitants. It is replete with history relevant to the Congress of Vienna game period. It boasts an old fortress with 17th-century Vauban bastions that was key to the southern corridor between Portugal and Spain during the Peninsular War. It was occupied by the French March 1811 after the Spaniards surrendered.
