Border Reivers Two-Player Playtest AAR

Those of you who have read the Border Reivers rules will know that 2 and 3-player versions of the game exist, even though the expected number of players is either 4 or 6. I’m trying to get the 4 and 6-player versions finished first, so even though I’ve experimented enough with 2 and 3-player to be confident they work, I had never finished a full game of either. Until today. And it’s a story worth telling.

Triumph of Versailles: A Red Flag Over Paris After Action Report (Part 2)

In Part 1 of this AAR we saw the first two turns of Frédéric Serval’s Red Flag Over Paris. The Paris Commune, played by me, had a very poor first turn, and was almost wiped out by Fred’s Versailles Government. In the second turn I was able to make a comeback, but I am still behind on both scoring dimensions (Military and Political). There are two turns left (turn three plus the Final Crisis round) for me try and save the Commune!

The Commune Begins: A Red Flag Over Paris After Action Report (Part 1)

Red Flag Over Paris, designed by Frédéric Serval, is a new lunchtime CDG presenting the clash between the Paris Commune and the Versailles Government in the spring of 1871. The game takes place over three regular turns and a fourth “final crisis” turn, here representing the brutal suppression of the Commune during the “Bloody Week” of 21st-28th May 1871. Historically this resulted in the defeat of the Commune, but of course this time things might go differently! Today I will be playing as the Paris Commune against Fred’s Versailles Government and trying to avoid my historical fate.

Here I Stand: Full 6-Player Game After Action Report

I would like today to come back to one of the most epic boardgame sessions I have possibility to experience. This was a full, six-player play of Here I Stand (HIS). Yes, we decided to re-enact struggle in the Europe during the time of Reformation.

This was our second play of HIS – I need to report the first encounter still, but as this was a training play, that was much less exciting than what follows below. I and two of my colleagues for whom it was our 2nd session took lead of more difficult nationalities – I was in command of the Hapsburg Empire and Kuba managed France while Konrad struggled with the Papacy. At the same time, three new players were assigned less demanding factions: the Ottomans to Jarek, England to Jacek, and the Protestants to Lukasz. We managed to play 3 turns before we ran out of time. However, we were pretty close to the final…

SPQR Session Report: Bagradas Plains (255 BC)

As it is not so easy to get the players for Great Battles of History (GBoH), sometimes the best option is to play solitaire, trying to win against yourself! One of the greatest installments in this series is SPQR. It allows you to replay a variety of engagements, and the latest Deluxe Edition covers all the expansions. As I acquired SPQR some time ago, it was already high time to get into this. As for the scenario, I picked the one suggested by the designer – Bagradas Plains.
